A brief description of Nicotex:

Nicotex also known as nicotine gum is a type of chewing gum that delivers nicotine to the body. It is effectively used as an aid in nicotine replacement therapy and thereby helps in the cessation of smoking and quitting smokeless tobacco. It has also a significant property of not increasing the weight even after the cessation of smoking.

Mechanism of action of Nicotex:

Nicotine is a potent ganglionic and CNS stimulant. Nicotex shows its action by competitively get bind to the nicotine receptor in the brain and activates these receptors to release dopamine. Therefore helps in the quitting of the smoking and smokeless tobacco.

The dosage regimen of Nicotex:

Commercially, Nicotex is available in a dosing strength of 2 mg and 4 mg. the usual adult dose of Nicotex for the cessation of smoking is 4 mg that should be taken with the first cigarette within 30 minutes of waking up. If you are taking your first cigarette more than 30minutes of waking up then you should take 2 mg of Nicotex. You should take 1 piece of gum orally every 1 to 2 hours for 1 to 6 weeks. From 7 week to 9 weeks, you should take 1 piece of gum orally every 2 to 4 hours. Lastly, you have to take 1 piece of gum orally every 4 to 8 hours from 10 to 12 weeks. The maximum dose of nicotine chewing gum is 24 pieces per day.

Contraindications of Nicotex:

  • A person should not use any other nicotine products while taking Nicotine chewing gum.
  • If a woman is pregnant then she should not use this medication.

Precautions while taking Nicotex:

  • If you are suffering from diabetes, heart disease, arrhythmia, stomach ulcer, or untreated or uncontrolled high blood pressure, then you should avoid taking this medication.
  • If you have a history of seizures, if you have recently had a heart attack, or if you are on a low salt diet, then you should not use this medication.
  • This drug may harm a nursing baby if you are taking Nicotine even when you are a breastfeeding mother. Therefore, you should not take this medication without consulting your doctor.
  • Nicotine is not indicated to be used in those who have an age of less than 18.
  • You should not eat or drink within 15 minutes before using the Nicotine gum.

Side effects of Nicotex:

Some common side effects of Nicotex include blisters inside your mouth, wheezing, tightness in the chest, problems in the teeth or jaw, headache, dry mouth, and dizziness.
